SUMMARY:Press Breaker Film Screening
DESCRIPTION:All are invited as part of #SikhHeritageMonth celebrations to take part in a film screening of “Press Breaker” followed with a panel discussion on April 21 in the UFV Theatre\, room B101 on UFV’s Abbotsford Campus at 5:30 pm \nThe movie is the true story about Harleen Sidhu\, who was an average young girl from Surrey\, BC’s South Asian dominated Newton neighbourhood. She loved her family\, her culture\, and – like many South Asian Canadians – she loved the sport of basketball. At the young age of 13\, Sidhu found herself thrust into the Canadian national spotlight after she led her Grade 8 basketball team to an undefeated regular season in 2004\, shortly after which she was effectively banned from participating in the biggest tournament of her young career. She rallied alongside her school and community to fight the decision\, garnering widespread media attention in the process. The first of many battles over the course of her playing career\, Harleen went on to play NCAA Division I basketball and came back home for a storybook ending. \nThe panel discussion following the film screening\, featuring Harleen\, filmmakers\, and moderated by Dr. Sharanjit Kaur Sandhra\, will tackle issues of gatekeeping and racism in University/community sport and the ways to overcome systemic barriers. \nRefreshments to follow and maybe even some basketball shooting with youth! \nFor more information\, contact Sharanjit Sandhra at sharanjit.sandhra@gmail.com

SUMMARY:Paldi Heritage Minute Screening
DESCRIPTION:In celebration of Sikh Heritage Month\, please join us in the premiere screening of a new Heritage Minute by Historica Canada on April 19th\, that showcases the rich cultural heritage of Paldi\, a welcoming and inclusive town founded by immigrants on Vancouver Island\, BC. \nAn historic town in the Cowichan Valley on Vancouver Island\, Paldi was founded in 1916 by Mayo Singh Manhas. A punjabi man who alongside his brother and other Punjabi families\, started the town and with the location close to the railways took advantage of the opportunity and ran their own successful lumber company\, Mayo Lumber Company. Soon\, Japanese\, Chinese\, and European families made Paldi their home and worked the mill\, and a community began to form. \nIn 1919\, a Gurdwara (sikh temple) was built\, followed by a school\, a company story and post office\, and a Japanese temple. The town thrived off the lumber mills\, and the diverse and rich community that was built that called the town to be their home. \nThe town was bustling\, until the mid and late 50s\, after World War II and the persecution of Japanese and immigrant families caused many to not return from the war\, or displaced from their homes. \nIn 1955\, Mayo\, also known as the “Cowichan Lumber King” passed away and in honour of his death\, the mill went quiet. Soon the business trickled down stream to Nanamio\, where a new operation was built and the residents that returned of Paldi followed. \nThough nobody lives in Paldi now\, the Gurdwara remains the last building still standing. \nThis story of Paldi on April 19th is captured through the eyes of the town’s founder’s wife Bishan Kaur Mayo. \nAll are welcome\, and a dinner will be served along with the experience of this story. \nRSVP by April 17 by emailing sasi@ufv.ca
