Support CIVL

Community Radio Fund of Canada Logo

In 2025, CIVL completed a CRFC funded project to document the 20 year history of Campus and Community Radio in the Fraser Valley, in honour of the 20th anniversary of Society incorporation on June 17th, 2025.

The documentary, “COUNTERCULTURE: 20 Years of CIVL Radio in the Fraser Valley”, follows along with station personnel as they work towards completion of it’s historic second repeater tower – a first for a Canadian campus radio station – while we learn about the trials and tribulations that have made CIVL what it is today, from some of the founders, musicians and community members it impacted most.

If you are interested in presenting this documentary to your community, please contact info@civl.ca in order to coordinate opportunities to screen or host this 63 minute film in your community.

CIVL staff and partners are eager to work with you to bring panel discussions, and interactive musical performances with documentary subjects and other local and community oriented stakeholders, to your community.

This project would not have been made possible without the continued support of the Community Radio Fund of Canada, and we encourage you to visit them and donate at www.mycri.ca

As CIVL grows and moves forward, we are working on establishing our own student scholarship grant, to encourage media literacy and accessible education to local students, so please check back for more information on how you can support these endeavours in the future.

????️ Support CIVL 101.7 FM

We’re more than just radio. We’re building the Fraser Valley’s cultural infrastructure.

Why Support CIVL?

CIVL is the campus and community radio station based at the University of the Fraser Valley—but our impact goes far beyond campus walls.

Since 2010, we’ve grown from a $60,000/year grassroots operation into a cultural engine generating $1.5–2 million in annual economic impact. Whether it’s music, media, mentorship, or documentary storytelling, CIVL builds spaces that reflect and invest in the real Fraser Valley.

Our focus: championing artists, building access, and creating new spaces for underrepresented voices in a region that’s often resistant to change.

What We’ve Built

  • Canada’s only campus station with two FM frequenciesIn 2024, CIVL launched 92.3 FM to join 101.7—expanding our reach to Chilliwack and beyond. No other campus-based community station in Canada has ever done this.
  • The Fraser Valley Music Awards (FVMAs)Now in its 10th year, the FVMAs have delivered over $150,000 in direct funding to local musicians. With CIVL’s help, artists have gone on to sign with labels, tour internationally, and earn praise on BBC and from Iggy Pop himself!
  • National Award-Winning Volunteer DevelopmentCIVL volunteers have twice been named Canada’s Campus/Community Radio Volunteer of the Year in the last three years. These wins reflect long-term relationships—not just achievements. Behind those headlines are real stories of mentorship, inclusion, and transformation.
  • A Feature-Length DocumentaryOur newly completed film captures the unseen story of CIVL: what it took to build a cultural movement in one of Canada’s most politically and culturally complex regions. But the documentary isn’t the end—it’s a launchpad. Produced with independent filmmakers and local voices, it’s both a celebration and a call to action.

Taking the Doc on the Road

In 2025 and beyond, we’ll be screening the documentary across the Fraser Valley and beyond—at film festivals, town halls, and community venues. These events will feature live performances, artist Q&As, workshops, and more, bringing together the film’s participants, CIVL staff, and local changemakers.

The goal is to mobilize the story—so it doesn’t just inspire, but connects and builds.

To schedule a viewing of COUNTERCULTURE: 20 Years of CIVL Radio in the Fraser Valley for you, your group, or community, with engagement opportunities from CIVL staff, volunteers and engaged musicians, please contact info@civl.ca with the subject line “COUNTERCULTURE Screening”

A New Way to Support: The CIVL Scholarship

We don’t ask listeners for money. But this year, we are creating a way for you to invest in others.

The CIVL Scholarship supports local volunteers and artists directly—providing resources to continue their work in music, media, and community development. Whether you’re an alum, a cultural funder, or a first-time visitor, this is your chance to help build the future.
