SUMMARY:On Target: Gun Culture\, Storytelling\, And the NRAND THE NRA
DESCRIPTION:Political Science Department cordially invites you to celebrate our POSC faculty member Noah S. Schwartz\, an Assistant Professor of Political Science at the University of the Fraser Valley\, on the publication of On Target: Gun Culture\, Storytelling\, and the national Rifle Association (NRA). \nOn Target explores why the NRA is so influential and how we can understand the group’s impact on firearms policy in the United States. The book looks at how the NRA both draws upon and shapes historical meta-narratives regarding the role of firearms in America’s national identity and how this is part of a larger effort to expand the community of gun owners. Noah S. Schwartz demonstrates how the NRA portrays a vision of the past through events such as its annual meeting; communications such as American Rifleman magazine and NRA TV; and points of contact including the National Firearms Museum. \nThe book lauch is being held at UFV’s Abbotsford Campus in Building A\, Room A225 – UFV Boardroom. The event is open to all UFV and the public. Refreshments will be served. \nFor more information and to RSVP\, email natasha.tvete@ufv.ca. \nFor any questions\, please contact edward.akuffo@ufv.ca or 604.504.7441 ext. 4444

SUMMARY:Toad People Film Screening
DESCRIPTION:The UFV Wildlife Protection Club\, in collaboration with SLUECSA\, UFV SLOW & Nature Canada\, is hosting a community event on the UFV Abbotsford campus on November 30th (Wednesday)\, from 5-7 pm. \nCome in and learn what communities across BC are doing to protect biodiversity\, and a chance to have your voice hear by the Government this December by joining thousands of Canadians in writing a letter\, encouraging the government to set strong targets to preserve the biodiversity in Canada. These messages will be collected by Nature Canada as part of their cross-country bus tour and delivered to the Prime Minister at the UN Convention of Biodiversity (Nature COP) in Montreal on December 6th. \nWe are having a free showing of the documentary film ‘Toad People’ which tells the story of families and communities across BC who are taking action to save the wildlife in their backyard\, including conservation efforts right here in the Fraser Valley. Following the 50 minute film\, we will have a buffet of snacks/refreshments and letter writing stations set-up where attendees can write messages to the Prime Minister expressing why Canada should protect more natural areas.  We’re trying to get as many nature-loving people as possible to attend and send a collective message to the government that Canadians want strong targets for biodiversity protection\, while enjoying free food and a film! Kids are welcome!
