Ep:4- Depression

24 November 2025 / by CIVL Radio

In this episode of In Common, we explore the theme of depression from a Christian perspective with Father Matthew Gerlich, OSB, a Benedictine monk of Westminster Abbey in Mission, BC. In conversation with hosts Dr. Allyson Jule and Katherine Murray, Father Matthew reflects on the Christian understanding of depression and acedia—sometimes described as spiritual weariness or “the noonday demon.” He shares wisdom from both scripture and Christian tradition, offering insight into how spiritual practices can guide us toward hope and abundant life. This conversation is inspired by Kathleen Norris’s book Acedia and Me.

About the Guest
Father Matthew Gerlich, OSB, was born and raised in Edmonton, Alberta. After studying economics and working in economic development, he discerned a call to monastic life and entered Westminster Abbey in Mission, BC in 1988, making profession of vows in 1989. He was ordained to the priesthood in 1993 and, apart from two years of study in Rome, has lived in the Abbey community and served in the seminary since that time.

Formed by the Benedictine tradition and enriched by the spiritual wisdom of St. Ignatius of Loyola, Father Matthew has developed a deep commitment to spiritual direction and now accompanies others on their faith journeys. In addition to his ministry, he enjoys the beauty and quiet of nature, which has been a lifelong source of peace and inspiration.
